The East Anglian Railway Museum has become a popular tourist attraction for Colchester and the local area since its foundation in 1968. The museum is home to a unique collection of steam and diesel locomotives, as well as a wide variety of rolling stock. Based at Chappel & Wakes Colne station, with the picturesque Chappel Viaduct to the south, the museum is served by one train every hour in both directions between Sudbury and Marks Tey. Visitors travelling by train can change at Marks Tey for regular services between London (Liverpool Street) and Colchester.

Throughout the year the museum hosts several events for railway fans of all ages, from Day Out With Thomas™ where children and parents can equally enjoy rides on board Thomas, Percy, Toby and Daisy, to the enthusiast-focused Steam and Diesel Galas. On these days, visitors can experience the museum’s full working fleet in action. The miniature railway is also operational on most event days.

The museum is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, with plenty of static exhibits as well as a children’s playground and a model railway layout.

The historic Goods Shed has been restored to its former glory and can be hired as a multi-purpose venue, from parties and wedding receptions to concerts. Britpop legends Blur played their first ever gig here in 1989 and then again in 2009 on their Reunion Tour. The Goods Shed also hosts the Chappel Beer Festival, held twice a year in March and September.
