Laugharne Castle

Laugharne Castle

Paper Voucher only

This is the ‘brown as owls’ castle beloved of Dylan Thomas, Laugharne’s most famous resident. He wrote Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog in the castle summerhouse perched above glorious views of the Taf estuary.
Here two giant medieval stone towers stand guard over the remains of a magnificent Tudor mansion, all set in 19th century ornamental gardens. After centuries of conflict between Welsh and Anglo-Normans, Laugharne was rescued from near ruin by Elizabethan courtier Sir John Perrot. He turned the dilapidated 13th-century castle into a residence fit for a gentleman, including a grand hall whose gaping windows still stare out over the water.

Dyma'r castell ‘brown as owls’ oedd yn annwyl gan Dylan Thomas, trigolyn enwocaf Talacharn. Ysgrifennodd Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog yn nhŷ haf y castell a safai uwchlaw golygfeydd godidog o aber afon Taf.
Yma saif dau dŵr cerrig canoloesol enfawr yn gwarchod olion plasty Tuduraidd godidog, a’r cyfan wedi'u gosod mewn gerddi addurnol o'r 19eg ganrif.
Wedi canrifoedd o wrthdaro rhwng y Cymry a'r Eingl-normaniaid, achubwyd Talacharn rhag mynd yn adfail llwyr gan un o wŷr llys Elisabeth 1, Syr John Perrot. Trodd y castell adfeiliedig o'r 13eg ganrif yn gartref addas i ŵr bonheddig, cartref ac iddo neuadd fawreddog sydd â’i ffenestri agored yn dal i syllu dros y dŵr.
