Rembrandt’s ‘Self-portrait at the age of 34’

Brighton Museum and Art Gallery - 10th May until 4th August 2024

Rembrandt was an accomplished portrait painter in the 17th century with his self-portrait work being some of the most talked about in art history. His ‘Self-portrait painting at age 34’ will be exhibited alongside photographic work from local 13-16 year olds who considered how they would like to be seen by their peers, when, like Rembrandt, they reach the age of 34.

Botticelli’s ‘Venus and Mars’

The Fitzwilliam Museum - 10th May until 10th September 2024

As Venus the Goddess of Love looks upon Mars the God of War, this 15th century painting was thought to be produced to celebrate a marriage and supports the belief during this time, that women gazing upon beautiful male bodies were more likely to give birth to boys.

Displayed alongside ‘Venus and Mars’ will be three major Italian Renaissance works in different media, and exploring ideas of sex and power, gender and the body.
