Safety on the railway

Your safety and security is of paramount importance. Our Rail Enforcement Officers and Security personnel work around the clock, looking out for you.

Safety on the railway

Whether you’re travelling during the festive season or at any other time of the year, your safety is our top priority. Our Rail Enforcement Officers and security personnel work around the clock, looking out for you.

While we’re here to ensure safe and reliable journeys, there are a few simple actions you can take to protect yourself and those around you.

During the festive period, we're highlighting 'The 12 Steps of Safe Travel’ to help you stay safe and comfortable.

The 12 Steps of Safe Travel

A festive guide for safer, smoother journeys.

2

Grab the Handrail and Jingle All the Way

Hold onto handrails when moving through stations and platforms, especially when it’s icy.

Tip: If you notice an area is particularly slippery, please report it to a staff member - they’re here to help keep everyone safe.

3

Let It Snow While You Step Slow

Wet winter weather means slippery surfaces. Take your time to avoid unnecessary slips.

If you see a hazard, please notify a member of our friendly team at the station.

4

Deck the Halls and Hold Your Bags

Keep an eye on your belongings to ensure they’re secure and not a tripping hazard for others.

Security teams and CCTV are here to help, but we all have a role in making travel safe. Stay aware of your belongings to prevent theft and keep pathways clear for others.

5

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Stay hydrated, especially after holiday parties, to keep your travels fresh and focused.

7

All I Want for Christmas is You (to Check In)

Notice someone looking unwell? A quick “are you okay?” can make a big difference.

Our staff, equipped with body-worn cameras, are here to assist. Don't hesitate to reach out if you or others need support.

8

Make It the Most Spacious Time of the Year

During peak hours, give your fellow travellers extra space to make everyone's journey comfortable.

Station staff help manage crowds, especially during busy travel periods.

9

Lend a Helping Hand Like Frosty

Assist fellow travellers with prams, luggage, or navigating the station, or notify a staff member.

Help Points are located across our stations if you need immediate assistance.

10

Spread Joy with a Seat this Season

If someone looks like they need a seat more than you, offer it to them. Sharing is caring!

Year-round safety and security

While the festive season is a time for joy and celebration, our safety measures are in place 365 days a year to protect our passengers and staff. Here’s how we keep our railway secure:

a cctv camera

CCTV surveillance

We have CCTV cameras across all stations and trains to monitor activity and ensure passenger safety.

a body camera on a person's shoulder

Body-worn cameras

Many of our frontline staff wear body-worn cameras to enhance security, deter anti-social behaviour, and provide evidence if needed.

Visible security presence

Our security staff regularly patrol stations and trains to provide assistance and maintain a safe environment.

Stay aware of your surroundings

Be mindful of your environment, especially in crowded areas.

Keep emergency contacts handy

Save important numbers like railway helplines and emergency services in your phone.

Speak to a member of staff

If you see something suspicious, speak to one of our staff on the station or on the train.

Lock your bike

When parking your bike, make sure you lock it with high-quality locks, ideally a minimum of two.

Look out for each other

A small act of kindness can make a big difference. If you see someone in need, offer help or notify a staff member.

Together we can make every journey safe

No matter the season, small actions can make a big difference. By looking out for one another and using the safety resources available, we can create a railway environment that is welcoming, secure, and enjoyable for everyone.

Stay safe, travel smart, and enjoy your journey with Thameslink.
