Travelling with pets
You can take up to two domestic pets (dogs, cats, and other small animals) on board our services, subject to the conditions below. By keeping pets, controlled, calm, and considerate, journeys can remain safe and comfortable for all passengers.
General guidelines for all pets
- Any pet without a lead must be carried in a basket no bigger than 85 x 60 x 60 cm.
- On trains, all pets – including those in containers – should be stored on the floor, leaving seats available for paying passengers.
- When boarding, carry your pet where possible to avoid accidents between the platform and train.
- If you, your pet, or their lead becomes trapped in the doors, immediately use the passenger emergency alarm to contact the driver.
- Pets are allowed on rail replacement buses at the discretion of the driver. Some coach operators do not allow animals on their vehicles.
- Service and assistance dogs are always permitted. Please give them space as they are working to assist their owner.
Safety and comfort for dogs
Dogs are a common travel companion. To ensure safe journeys for everyone, please follow these tips:
- Use a short lead at all times, particularly on platforms, escalators, lifts, and when boarding or leaving the train.
- Stay aware of doors – keep leads, tails, and paws clear to prevent accidents.
- Bring fresh water for longer journeys and ensure your dog remains calm and comfortable.
- Keep dogs off seats and out of busy aisles to prevent tripping hazards.
Consideration for others
- Not all passengers are comfortable around animals, so allow space for others.
- If you have a dog, please avoid your dog jumping, barking excessively, or blocking aisles and doors.
Guidance from staff
- Station and train staff are trained to help maintain safety. Please follow their guidance at stations and on trains, they’re trained to look out for everyone’s wellbeing.
- Some staff may not be comfortable around animals – please respect their boundaries.
