Ticket overview

Off-Peak train tickets provide a flexible and budget-friendly way to travel, whether you need a single, return, or open return ticket.

Benefits

  • Enjoy lower fares when travelling during Off-Peak times compared to peak hours.
  • Railcard holders can benefit from additional discounts on Off-Peak tickets.
  • Off-Peak travel usually means quieter trains and better chances of getting a seat, making for a more relaxed journey.

When can I use this ticket type?

Off-Peak tickets are valid on weekdays outside of the busiest travel periods, as well as anytime on weekends and bank holidays. As Off-Peak times vary by route, it’s best to use the journey planner to check which trains are valid for your trip.

These tickets are perfect for leisure travellers, flexible commuters, and those travelling on weekends or bank holidays, as they are valid throughout the day on those occasions.

Things to remember

  • Time restrictions: There isn’t a universal time restriction for Off-Peak tickets, as it depends on your specific journey. If you haven’t purchased your ticket yet, our journey planner will indicate which trains your Off-Peak ticket can be used on. If you’ve already bought a ticket, check the time restrictions by entering the website address printed on your ticket - this will always begin with www.nre.co.uk/.
  • Validity period: Off-Peak single tickets and the outward portion of return tickets are valid on the date printed on the ticket until 04:29 the next morning. If you have an Off-Peak Day ticket, all travel must be completed by 04:29 the following day.
  • Additional restrictions: If you’re using a Railcard or other discounts, there may be extra conditions attached to your ticket. Please refer to National Rail’s website for full details.

How can I save more, and what discounts are available?

  • With GroupSave, groups of three to nine adults travelling together during Off-Peak times can save 1/3 on fares—ideal for family days out or trips with friends.
  • If you have a Railcard, you’ll receive 1/3 off Off-Peak tickets, making travel even more affordable.
  • Don’t forget our Kids for £2 offer, where up to four children can travel for just £2 each at Off-Peak times when accompanied by an adult on most journeys, making family travel even better value.

Benefits of buying direct

  • No booking fees: When you buy directly from Thameslink, you won’t be charged booking fees, meaning the price you see is the price you pay.
  • Flexible ticket options: Choose how you receive your ticket—collect from a station machine, add to a Key Smartcard, have it posted to you, or opt for an eTicket on your smartphone.
  • Delay Repay: If you buy directly from us, you may receive compensation for any delays more easily through Delay Repay, than if you were to have purchased with a third-party retailer. If you have a Key Smartcard, use Auto Delay Repay via the app for added convenience.
